wpeA0.gif (6184 bytes) The traditional Dominican (Marian/Catholic) Decade rosary is divided into 5 sections of ten beads each.  These sections are called "decades", and the beads in them are shown on this diagram as white roses. wpeA0.gif (6184 bytes)

wpeA0.gif (6184 bytes) Rosary means rose garden, and each prayer bead becomes another rose in a garland made in offering to Mary. On the Marian rosary, the Ave (Hail Mary) prayer is said on each of the ten decade beads.

Each of the decades represent one meditation in a group of five, called a Mystery. On the Marian Rosary, there are four Mysteries : the Joyful  Mysteries; the Sorrowful Mysteries; the Glorious Mysteries, and since Popo John Paul decreed them, the Luminous Mysteries.

The tradition with the Marian Rosary is to pray the Joyful on Mondays, Thursdays and Advent Sundays; the Sorrowful on Tuesdays, Fridays and  Sundays of Lent; and the Glorious on all other    Sundays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.

The prayer said on the divider beads on the Marian rosary is called the Pater Noster, or Our Father prayer.

Also on the Marian Rosary, between the cross and the circle, there are five beads, two Our Father and three Hail Mary which lead to the circle of the rosary, which are diagramed below. A center medal is used to connect the circle to this strand of beads to which the cross is attached, and here I've used a Miraculous Medal Center.

This is where the closing prayer or meditation is said,  the Hail Holy Queen .
